The U.S. nomadic gallery Superposition, for instance, dedicates its booth to a solo presentation of glass works by Nigerian artist Layo Bright, who is currently having a solo museum show at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. The delicate works, which feature a series of faces obscured by floral elements, interrogate themes of identity and Nigerian customs. The gallery’s owner Storm Ascher was invited to 1-54’s London edition after participating in its New York fair last year and praised how the fair’s community-oriented spirit aligned with the gallery. “They just put us on the map internationally, and it gave us that traction for other places that normally wouldn’t have even looked at us,” Ascher told Artsy. “It gives a lot of visibility to Black women-led galleries and Black artists across different ethnicities and experiences.” Within the first few hours of the fair, the gallery had sold a pair of Bright’s works. #artsy #layobright #thealdrich #superpositiongallery #stormascher #154London #154artfair #somersethouse #art #sculpture

Layo has been in our program since our first year of operation and has since blossomed into one of the most coveted glass workers in contemporary art today. Bright’s solo museum debut, Dawn and Dusk is currently on view at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield CT, USA, through the end of October, so we are grateful to have the opportunity to share this new work across the pond. Bloom expounds on Bright’s glass sculpture motifs, elegance and transparency. Each work in the exhibit is beautifully crafted with kiln formed glass, flameworked glass, mirrored glass, and blown glass. Using personal histories, Layo Bright gives life to the uniqueness of the diaspora. She is often inspired by the resilience to survive while navigating complex life-defining issues. Layo Bright (b. Hiba Schahbaz Fire Breather, 2024 50 x 70 inches Oil on wood Hiba Schahbaz was born in Karachi, Pakistan and lives in Brooklyn, NY. She works with paper, black tea, and water-based pigments as well as oil on linen. She depicts women’s bodies often referencing self-portraiture, creating a space for herself and other women to tell their stories and reclaim their histories. Since migrating to the United States, her practice has expanded from miniature painting to human-scale works. Schahbaz trained in miniature painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore and received an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute. Her recent exhibitions include include In New York Thinking of You at FLAG Art Foundation (2023), Love Songs at Almine Rech Paris (2023), Fire Figure Fantasy at ICA Miami (2022), Wonder Women at Jeffrey Deitch (2022), Nova at Half Gallery LA (2022), Messages from the 6th Dimension at Almine Rech London (2022), In My Heart, a public art commission for Rockefeller Centre with Art Production Fund (2021) She has been written about in Whitewall, Artforum, NY Mag, Forbes, The Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Coveteur, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Art Critical amongst other publications. Patricia Encarnación for NADA House 2024 Tracing the Underside: The Epigenetics of Tropicalization will be on view at NADA House 17 on the 2nd Floor at Nolan Park on Governors Island and will be open to the public through October 27th, Friday to Sunday, from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Encarnación’s exhibition explores the intricate relationship between Caribbean bodies and landscapes as territories that withhold memories. This project delves into the historical and contemporary implications of tropicalization, employing themes of Afrofuturism and mad studies to interrogate notions of kinship and identity within the African diaspora. The project employs a photo documentary-style approach, focusing on self-portraits and portraits that highlight adaptation’s resilience and transformative potential.

Curated by Superposition founder Storm Ascher, the show consists of several portraited-collage works that depict different subjects dressed in a green sweater, created solely with strips of watercolored paper manipulated onto watercolor backgrounds, resulting in a multi-layered piece both physically and conceptually.  Of Yesterday Was Hard, Lander says, “These portraits serve as poignant vignettes, capturing the essence of reflection as the subjects wrestle with the echoes of yesterday’s challenges.”

Titled Tracing the Underside: The Epigenetics of Topicalization, the show will be on view at NADA House 17 on the 2nd Floor at Nolan Park on Governors Island and will be open to the public from September 3rd through October 27th, Friday to Sunday, from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. The VIP walkthrough and reception will be hosted on September 6th, from 1:00 to 2:00PM, followed by the public opening until 5PM. Encarnación’s exhibition explores the intricate relationship between Caribbean bodies and landscapes as territories that withhold memories. This project delves into the historical and contemporary implications of tropicalization, employing themes of Afrofuturism and mad studies to interrogate notions of kinship and identity within the African diaspora. The project employs a photo documentary-style approach, focusing on self-portraits and portraits that highlight adaptation’s resilience and transformative potential. By mimicking positions traditionally associated with the punishment of enslaved individuals — practices that have, disturbingly, been passed down through generations — the installation  seeks to reclaim these narratives, challenging the associations with punishment and instead fostering new understandings of identity. This exploration of embodied landscapes seeks to blur the boundaries between self and environment, emphasizing how Caribbean bodies adapt and thrive amid external constraints. The title is inspired by Édouard Glissant’s assertion that “Our landscape is its own monument: its meaning can only be traced on the underside. It is all history” (Caribbean Discourse, 1989). Central to this inquiry is the scholarship of Krista A. Thompson’s An Eye For The Tropics: Tourism, Photography, and Framing the Caribbean Picturesque, which informs the project’s visual narrative. By capturing moments of connection between individuals and the landscapes, Tracing the Underside underscores the significance of ancestral memory, revealing how these bonds serve as pathways to understanding one’s heritage.

We are delighted to announce our participation in NADA House 2024 with @patricia.encarnacion.c Opening Reception September 6, 2024 at NADA House Nolan Park, Building 17 Governors Island New York, NY 11231 Patricia Encarnación (she/they) is an Afro-Dominican interdisciplinary artist and scholar. Her work critically engages with colonial legacies across various socio-cultural layers within Afro-diasporic communities, focusing on the Caribbean, Latin America, and it’s diaspora. Through explorations of material culture, collective memory, and cultural identity, Encarnación challenges tropes of Caribbean and tropical aesthetics by recontextualizing everyday objects, landscapes, and aesthetics from her upbringing. Encarnación was a Van Lier fellow during her residency at Smack Mellon and has participated in multiple residencies, including MuseumsQuartier Vienna, Kovent Catalonia, and most recently, the Silver Arts Project residency at the World Trade Center. Their artwork has been showcased at diverse platforms such as Documenta 15, the Tribeca Festival Artist Program Award, NADA Art Fair, Afro Syncretic at NYU, and I am New Afro Latinx at MOLAA, CA. Encarnación has been twice selected for The Centro Leon Jiménez Biennial in Santiago, DR, earning the city of Cádiz (Spain) cultural immersion prize and a special invitation to a fellowship sponsored by the French consulate in Martinique as part of the Tropiques Atrium Caribbean art program. They have also received recognition from the NALAC Fund for the Arts. In addition to their artistic career, Encarnación has engaged in curatorial practices at Centro de la Imagen CDMX, Bronx Museum, ChaShama, WOPHA Miami, and various alternative gallery spaces in NYC, Miami, and the Dominican Republic. Encarnación received a full-tuition scholarship to complete their BFA at Parsons, The New School of Design, New York, in 2014, and an AAS degree in Illustration and Fine Arts from Altos de Chavon, the School of Design. They later pursued graduate studies, earning a full-tuition scholarship for the Caribbean Studies concentration in Museum Studies at NYU, where they graduated in 2022.
